Personal Interests
My interest in aviation started at a young age in Monticello, Iowa. I was fascinated by the beauty and power of the large machines I saw at air shows, and my first flight in a small aircraft came at a fly-in breakfast in my hometown. I eventually pursued that interest through a degree in Aerospace Engineering and earned my private pilot certificate along the way. After college, I spent five years on active duty in the U.S. Navy as a Nuclear Training Officer. I trained sailors in the classroom and in the practical operation of a nuclear reactor aboard a moored training ship. The Navy gave me an appreciation for preparation, precision, and resource management, as well as the importance of being able to rely on the people around you when operating complex systems. Since leaving the Navy, I have fully invested myself in aviation and have spent nearly two years as a flight instructor at CAE in the Phoenix area. One of the most rewarding parts of instructing has been watching someone go from their very first flight to confidently flying their first solo. I enjoy being both a teacher and a teammate—holding students to a high standard while being honest about what I know, what I don’t, and continually learning myself. I love the perspective that flying provides and the opportunity to see the world from the cockpit. I’m excited by the possibility of flying increasingly capable aircraft and helping people get wherever they need to go. Outside of aviation, my fiancée and I enjoy traveling, and I have always been active in endurance sports, completing a triathlon and a marathon in the past year. These days, you’ll more often find me weightlifting or looking for an opportunity to escape the Phoenix heat and spend some time in the mountains. My long-term goal is to build a career as a professional pilot and eventually fly for an airline, while continuing to learn and grow through every opportunity aviation provides.
