About Us
The State Bureau of Investigation’s mission is to serve Sheriffs, Police Chiefs, and District Attorneys as well as State and Federal partners, by investigating crimes and providing technical assistance in order to increase public safety for the citizens of the [Company]. The SBI does so by conducting criminal investigations of allegations in areas of jurisdiction including narcotics, arson, election laws, misuse of state property, environmental crimes, human trafficking, child sexual abuse in day care centers, and threats made against public officials. The SBI provides support to local agencies related to computer crime investigations, use of force investigations, deaths in custody, crime scenes, financial crimes, missing and endangered persons, public corruption, cold cases, K9, special response team, bomb squad, and air wing. The SBI serves as North Carolina's repository of information on criminal history records, fingerprint identification, expungements, sex offender registry, and concealed handgun permits. The SBI manages the North Carolina Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAAC), which is the fusion center for the [Company], as well as the Behavioral Threat Assessment Unit, which assesses and manages threats of mass violence.
Description of Work
This position provides the law enforcement community of North Carolina with a unique and special service which is the utilization of an aircraft in law enforcement. The Pilot position will utilize the aviation resources of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to assist local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and officials. The pilot will operate a variety of aircraft and use these aircraft to support various law enforcement functions such as aerial surveillance, aerial photography, aerial searches, aerial reconnaissance, searches for missing persons and suspects, fugitive searches, emergency/disaster flights, prisoner and agent/officer transport, and airborne communications coordination and relay. This position serves directly under the Air Operations Supervisor. The SBI Air Wing hangar is located in Harnett County, North Carolina, and some travel to this location will be required.
Job responsibilities include the following:
Utilize high performance single engine aircraft and high-altitude high performance single engine turbine aircraft to accomplish the mission of the SBI Air Wing.
Provide a wide array of aerial transportation services including, but not limited to, the transportation of SBI personnel, agents/officers from federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, personnel at criminal justice agencies, witnesses, adult and child victims, confidential informants, criminal suspects, and the extradition of prisoners or fugitives.
This position will periodically work irregular hours including being on-call and some overnight travel.
PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a Sworn Law Enforcement position.

Salary Range: $61,545 - $103,000

Management Preferences:
Demonstrated knowledge of FAA rules and regulations governing the use of aircraft in the aircraft to which assigned.
Demonstrated skill in operating complex high-performance single-engine reciprocating aircraft, and single-engine turbine powered aircraft in all weather conditions, including adverse flight conditions and in high- and low-density airspace and high- and low-density altitude environments.
Must possess and maintain FAA required instrument flight currency and/or successfully complete an instrument proficiency check by an FAA Certified Instrument Instructor prior to acting as pilot in command on SBI aircraft.
Skill in clearly and concisely communicating with federal and military air traffic controllers (ATC) to explain the flight maneuvers necessary to accomplish the mission.
Ability to establish and maintain favorable working relationships with SBI personnel, other law enforcement agencies and officers, personnel with criminal justice agencies, federal regulatory officials, and the public.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with Benefits.
