The Director of Safety is responsible for providing the highest aviation safety standards for administration, management, employees, and students as well as to develop, implement and oversee, and administer the UND Safety Management System and Aerospace Aviation Safety Action Program.
Director of Aviation Safety:
Plans, directs, and coordinates all activities necessary to ensure proper safety policies, objectives and standards are established, clearly defined, supported, and enforced.
Provides independent risk assessment and analysis, separate from line management, and independently monitors safety and ensures communication and accountability.
Formulates and develops flight systems safety guides and accomplishes a system of safety reviews, appraisals, and evaluations of flight training activities.
Monitors aviation safety to ensure aircraft operations are in accordance with published standards, rules, regulations, and pilot training and proficiency meet required safety standards.
Liaison between UND, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Universities, and industry.
Liaison with Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) in conjunction with Aircraft Accident Investigation Course.
Conduct safety inspections of all UND Aerospace and UNDAF operations or facilities.
Safety Manager for UND Aerospace:
The safety manager is responsible for providing guidance and direction for the planning, implementation and operation of the organization’s safety management system (SMS), identifying potential hazards, and conducting safety risk assessments.
Ensure the SMS processes are developed, implemented and maintained to include oversight.
Administer Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP)
Conduct SMS audits under the auspices of FAR Part 5.
Safety Culture and Promotion:
Educate and communicate with UND Aerospace faculty, staff and students on safety related matters, promoting a positive safety culture.
Work alongside UND Flight Operations for ensuring the best aviation safety practices.
Lead and administer Aviation Safety Council
Plan and conduct periodic Safety seminars, meetings and briefings
Conduct SMS training under the auspices of FAR Part 5.
Conduct stage checks to validate safety and quality of training.
Teach aviation safety related courses both in the undergraduate program, as well as to faculty and staff.
Other duties as assigned by the Dean of the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences.
Knowledge of and operational experience with aviation safety programs, aviation safety standards, and safe aviation operating practices.
Excellent leadership and organizational skills.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Bachelors in Aerospace, Aviation, or Aviation-Management Related Field.
Experience in management and administration.
Experience with the aviation industry and Federal Aviation Regulations Part 5, 61, 91 & 141.
Experience with computers and Microsoft Office suite.
Experience with industry safety systems including ASAP/Safety Reporting and FOQA/FDM.
Experience in collaboration among various stakeholder groups.
FAA Ratings:
Commercial Airplane Pilot Certificate with instrument & multi-engine rating.
Certified Flight Instructor – CFI/CFII/MEI.
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check.

Master’s Degree in Aviation related field.
Airline Transport Pilot Certificate.
Designated FAA FAAST TEAM Representative.
Valid FAA Class II medical certificate.
Knowledge and experience with aircraft accident investigations and NTSB Party System.
Thorough knowledge of aviation industry and Federal Aviation Regulations Part 139 and 145.
